Asia Argento, born in Rome to a family which includes actors and directors, pursued both professions. Sogni e bisogni, directed by Sergio Citti and starring Asia Argento when she was nine was her first film. In 1988 the film of Michele Soavi's The Church was directed by Michele Soavi and she played in the role of Cristina Comencini's Zoo. Next, in 1989 she played Nanni Moretti's (also directed) child in Red Wood Pigeon. Close Friends (1992) by Michele Placido (both writer and director) is where Asia truly began to take off. The film let her progress from roles that were primarily young females to more sophisticated adult character. Cannes International Film Festival was a huge achievement for the film. The actress has produced three films with her father, Trauma, The Stendhal syndrome and Phantom of the opera. The Phantom of the Opera is the third time she has collaborated together with the director's father. The others are Trauma as well as The Stendhal Syndrome. Giuseppe Piccioni's Condannato A Nozze showed Asia's absorption style of performing. In 1993, she played Arianna in Carlo Verdone's Perdiamoci di vista. The role was so complex that she won the David di Donatello prize for the best actress. Patrice Chereau helmed Queen Margot for which she played a crucial character. The year 1995 was the first time she was in a role alongside Michel Piccoli as Traveling Companion by Peter Del Monte. This performance earned her the David di Donatello award (for the top actor) and the Grolla in Oro. Asia began directing in 1994, and produced two shorts: Prospettive (1996), a document on her father, and Abel/Asia (1998) Abel/Asia, a feature about the cult filmmaker Abel Ferrara. The latter won an award from the Rome Film Festival. Asia's first feature length film debut is Scarlet Diva (2000) in 1999, where she also acted as the lead actress as well as wrote the screenplay. The film was made available globally in the month of May. The film won an award during the Williamsburg Film Festival in Brooklyn, New York. Anna Lou, her first baby, was born to her in the year 2001. She has directed numerous music videos. In 2002, she was involved in The Red Siren directed by Olivier Megaton and starred alongside Jean-Marc Barr. Rob Cohen also directed the action film featuring Vin Diesel. Asia also wrote several short stories which were published in a variety of magazines.
